We All Need a Rival!

I was watching the Texas vs. Oklahoma college football game this weekend and was thinking about how important their rivalry is for each school.  The fierce competition that exists between them is what fuels each team’s marketability, recruiting power, and championship opportunities.  It got me thinking.  Isn’t that what we want for our business?  What we all need is a rival!

Respect – The best rivalries are those where opponents have a mutual respect and admiration for one another.  They understand each other, see eye-to-eye, and know what the other has gone through on their quest for greatness!

Intensity – The desire to succeed and win is greatest when facing your rival.  There is no greater form of competition.  You are in a face-off, pursuing the same objective, challenging one another for the ultimate goal of superiority!

Vengeance – Competitors often deny the desire for revenge.  Maybe it’s because it carries a negative connotation, but deep down you know there is nothing sweeter than a little payback.  Forget the past.  The only thing that matters is today’s victory!

Allegiance – Rivalries put loyalty and commitment to the test.  They build unity among teammates.  Honor, character, and faith are all strengthened over time, through common experiences and the overcoming of obstacles.  It is about trust.

Legacy – There are always heros.  Legends emerge.  Each year, there are new stories to tell, and somewhere in the background, a hungry heart is listening with visions of glory!

Great timing, Doyle. We’re currently launching our product nationally and going head-to-head with an 800 pound Gorilla. How will we win? By having the PRIDE in our sales team that we will simply outsell them on the street. Thanks for putting our RIVAL in perspective while we proceed to kick their …

Couldn’t agree more, i once worked on a product with no competitors. There was only one person looking to stimulate the market, and the perceived value was only coming from one place, therefore the value from the buyer was a lot less.

    Doyle,
Amen! I grew up playing sports and I think that’s one of the reasons I like sales. It’s about meeting the customers needs first, but it is always fun to win when it’s in the customer’s best interest, too.
    Nice post.

Your insight into this is spot on. Your last line struck the loudest chord for me. As leaders, we need to identify those “hungry hearts listening with visions of glory” and then show them how they can live their dream.

Competition keeps us innovating our products, services and skills. Good for our customers, great for our teams.
