10 Ways to Burn Down Burnout

Are you exhausted?  …feeling like you have lost your passion?  Here’s a list of 10 things you can do to climb out of the rut and get re-energized!

1.  Take a Vacation – Why do we always feel guilty about taking a vacation?  Most of us have gone years without taking a full week of vacation.  That’s part of the reason for burnout.

2.  Get Some Sleep – Lack of sleep turns into fatigue, sluggishness, and headaches.  Why put yourself through that?  Get at least seven hours of sleep every night this week and see how it affects you mentally and emotionally.

3.  Eat Healthy - It’s easy to get frustrated and irritable because of the way we look and feel.  My dad is a former college football coach.  I used to love being in the locker room before the game.  One of his running backs used to primp in front of the mirror before hitting the field.  I remember him saying, “You look good, you feel good, you play good…”  It’s funny… but it’s true!

4.  Exercise – This one closely resembles to the last tip.  You look good, you feel good, you…

5.  Try Something New - Have you ever had something you’ve always wanted to do, but never got the chance?  Go do it!

6.  Strengthen Relationships – There are people who love you.  Go spend time with them.  Don’t think about anything but strengthening your relationship with them.  Enjoy the time.  Embrace the process.

7.  Take Some “Me” Time – We all need people, but we also need some time for ourselves.  My wife is one of those who feels guilty for needing some “me” time.  If you are like her and you give… and give… and give… it’s important to allow yourself to give a little time… to yourself.

8.  Simplify – How complicated is your life and your work.  Is it self-imposed?  Look at everything that you are doing and get rid of the things that don’t add value.

9.  Have Fun – We’ve heard motivational speakers discourage us from wasting our time watching TV, playing video games, and other mindless activities.  Maybe it’s OK to be mindless when we are “resting.”  If you enjoy doing those things… then go ahead… RELAX… have some fun!

10.  Get Some Wins – Do all of these things to keep yourself mentally and physically refreshed… you know you are unstoppable when you are sharp… and winning is the best way to burn down burnout!

Here is one I leaned from my experiences in the network marketing industry — “self development.”

    What is self development?

Simple, it is listening to and reading quality motivational or self-improvement audios and books.

In Jeff Olsen’s fabulous self-development book “The Slight Edge” (everyone should read this) he recommends that you turn your car into a drive-time university listening to things like “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” or “Think and Grow Rich.” His book is also a phenomenal choice.

You should read at least 10 pages in a good book and listen to at least 30 minutes of audio each day.

I have done this and it will change your life in weeks. If you do this on a regular basis you will NEVER have that run down or burn out feeling, NEVER.

Nice one Flyn. It’s a great reminder to get back to some of the quality basics that we tend overlook in this ever-increasingly fast paced business world.

  2. I think in today’s world, we are encouraged to work longer, and harder, and faster than ever before. Overindulgence in anything, including work, will take its toll. To be inspired and perform well in any role, we need to have balance in our lives. These 10 tips are an excellent way to find your centre, and get back some balance. Thanks Doyle :)

these ways can be of great help
I recommand some easier way to relax:
    casual walking
    cooking some delicious food
    chatting to intimate friends
    taking a bath

In this society it seems to be not done to relax from time to time.
In countries like the Netherlands taxpressure is as high as 52% therefore we can’t afford to relax and need to work harder and longer to earn a living for our own.
Bottom line is we al know what you are telling is real, we just cant afford to follow your wise advise.

Great, Doyle . . . and of course the most important step of all: Number 11, if you will:

    Are you breathing? http://bit.ly/bo3ZJy

My one-minute, 4-step stress management technique being used as you read this by over 20,000 sales pros I’ve shared this with in seminars and workshops . . . because it works!

Have a great week ahead! Best – Hal

  6. Great list! I really exercise a lot!!! I’d also add in there meditation. I’ve found that 15 – 20 minutes of mediation (or visualization) does wonders for recuperation. I perform at least to 15 minutes session a day. One when I wake up before going to the gym, then one more about 2:30 PM. This afternoon session reenergizes me for the rest of the day.
Oh ya…a vacation always works :-)

  7. Great timely post,
So many teams I am working with are tired, exhausted from what feels like pushing mud up hill in this economy. Buyers are taking longer, budgets are tighter, more people in the buying process and so on.
Your post is a reminder that we are not our jobs, our jobs are what we do.

    Thanks Doyle.
We all know these are true and beneficial, so why don’t we practice them?

    Hi Doyle,
Timely article but just want to say thank you as I want to forward this to others that recently expressed to me they were “burned out”

  10. Great post, Doyle! I especially like #7 and #9. These seem to come somewhat naturally and with ease on the weekends, but we somehow forget to give ourselves permission to do them during the week. Giving yourself permission to rest, have fun, and relax – even if that means being mindless every so often, is a good thing. I call it finding a “Sunday Mentality”. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep that “Sunday Mentality” going through the rest of the week? http://bit.ly/bLZKMw

  11. Great advice Doyle. We many times forget we need some time and activities to recharge.

Great article on burnout Doyle, thanks.

I used to spend a lot of time sitting in traffic, getting grumpier and grumpier. My solution: a cheap bottle of bubbles, the kind little kids play with. Roll down the window and blow away (it also helped me stop smoking). Made me feel good and the people in other cars around me got a lift too.

An obvious tip, take a lunch break. Leave the desk. Go for a walk (alone or with a group). Read a book. Just do something different.
