Return On Effort (ROE)
Sales managers often wonder why team activity levels are so low. “It didn’t used to be that way,” they think to themselves, and then it gets worse. It transforms into an attendance problem. Sales mangers become babysitters, “Where are you? Why aren’t you here? Every minute you are late is costing you deals!”
Disciplinary action taken on attendance issues doesn’t solve the core issues… engagement, buy-in, productivity, etc. Just because they are physically there doesn’t mean they are mentally there.
Sales Taxi
What do taxi drivers normally ask when you jump in?
Most of them ask, “Where are you headed?”
A couple of years ago, I had this “Sales Taxi” idea pop into my head. It carries a double-meaning…
What Have You In Common With Idols and Olympians?
Call my goofy, but American Idol is one of my favorite shows of all time. I think I could watch it all… day… long. I’ve always been drawn to people with talent, big dreams, and high aspirations.
I enjoy the Olympics for many of the same reasons. It’s inspiring to watch people on their quest to be the best in the world!
In both cases, there is a common theme that stands out above all else…
Manager Catch 22s
It humors me to think about how many “no win” situations mangers can get sucked into. We’ve all been there. For example… Employees often complain about how their manager didn’t train them on “something.” Yet when the manger schedules a formal training, those same employees complain about losing valuable selling time.
Another example revolves around the idea of micromanagement. The employee who at first complains about needing space, will later turn around and accuse the manager of “spending time with everyone else but me.”

When Nothing Is Ever Good Enough
If meets expectations isn’t acceptable, then it shouldn’t be “Meets”. Those goals should be “Requires” and an acceptable “Meets” expectations standard should be established. Of course that creates the quandary… If someone achieves the new accepted standard… Does that mean “Meets” expectations is good enough? Of course it does! I’ll let you in on a secret. I failed in my first management position. I had people who couldn’t… or should I say wouldn’t hit their goals. Although there are many pieces to the puzzle, I will only pinpoint a few in this post.

Back to Basics
Sometimes managers have to remind their people to get back to basics. A sales manager recently sent this letter to his team in preparation for their return to the office following the holidays. He sent me a copy and called to ask for my opinion. After our discussion, I told him I could offer him something even better. I promised to share it with my readers and get all of you to contribute your thoughts and opinions.
